My five year old son Homer fell asleep in my arms last night, which is definitely a little miracle given how attached he is to his mama. They are glued together every evening, but yesterday, the other little one yearned for some connection as Homer and I were coming off some early evening yard work, raking up mounds of hay and transporting wheelbarrows of it to the compost. He was a genuine help, focused and chatty, and every trip to empty the grass earned him a ride back to the next pile. A fair deal, we both felt. Later, when we got stuck together as temporary bedmates, his protest was expected, but the pride I felt in his outdoor efforts must have registered, because after one deflection, my offer to snuggle was accepted. He curled against my chest and promptly fell asleep, and I could revel in the sweet softness of his downy, duckling head before mama returned to her regular post.
I often talk about the magic we are confronted with, regardless of scale, and how the work (for me) is not to hunt endlessly for bigger and bigger experiences, but to allow the experiences we have to bleed into all the moments of our day. So that the mystical we encounter seeps into the crevices of the mundane. So that, eventually, we see miracle everywhere.
Several nights ago, a fox came to me in my dream and I was asked to bury it. I did, and when I woke up, deeply moved, I shared with mama who was awake downstairs. Three hours later, I was on my front lawn, burying a fox, amidst the long grass that soon became the hay piles Homer and I would collect.
Whether it was coincidence with fox, or genuine communion, interests me less than the story I get to create around it. I long for my dreams and my waking reality to grow more entwined. So when they do, the best way I can honor it is to proceed without fanfare. To carry on as if it were a normal part of my day. In doing so, it becomes normal.
This is what we do together, as a community, when we gather and share. We get to create a version of the world where magic and miracle of all shapes and size are a normal, expected part of our reality. We get to welcome the mystical back into the fold, where it belongs.
Join My Dentist's Son as we circle up again on June 7th from 3pm to 4:30pm at the Ferrisburgh Town Hall located at 3279 Route 7 in Ferrisburgh.
